I just came across a wonderful fundraiser from The American Red Cross [via]. They have a new website which allows you to create your own customized calendar using vintage Red Cross images like the famous Our Boys Need Sox poster shown left.
Wouldn't this make a great gift for a knitter (or anyone)?
Here's the description from their site:
"The Vintage Red Cross calendar system lets you build a beautiful wall calendar with images from our online gallery of vintage Red Cross posters and photographs. Personalize your calendar with special dates like birthdays and anniversaries. Each calendar is professionally printed, bound, and shipped to your home or office in about 10 days. For only $29.00 you can own one of these wonderful gifts and support the Red Cross. The proceeds help your local chapter so each dollar raised will go directly back to your local community."

what a great idea! and i love that vintage poster. it actually is so retro, it looks modern.

You are right about that. I've long wanted a reproduction of that poster, so I'm happy I can at least order a calendar using that for the cover.

thank you SO MUCH for linking to this! i wrote a few papers in grad school about "service knitting," mostly focused on the red cross. and there are so many of those great images that you can't find -- like the "pearl harbor, purl harder" poster. too bad they haven't included that one. again, thank you!

You are very welcome! Service knitting is so interesting. I wish there were more books out there in the vein of Idle Hands, because I love reading about that topic. That Purl Harder poster is excellent. Do you know if it was by the Red Cross?
