We're two episodes in on this cycle of Project Runway, and I'm not really feeling it yet. Even the usually delightful Tim Gunn is getting on my nerves. Thank God we have fourfour's recaps to make it more hilarious.
Last week's episode surprised me when Malan, one of the more entertaining characters on the show, got the big heave-ho. Whether he was a phony or a real phony, I can't speculate, but at least he was fun to watch. With Malan gone, my viewing affections have been transferred to Robert Best. Now this isn't really a surprise, because he's most known for his designs for Barbie, and that doll and I go way back. I spent a few years working at a place where it was not uncommon to see two guys clutching a Barbie doll between them while intensely discussing her outfit. This lead to a strage fascination with the Barbie doll collector culture. It was even on a Barbie listserv where I got flamed for the first time, with a succinct, "Screw u." Aah, memories. Maybe I'll have to knit something for one of those naked Barbies stashed away in my closet.
Various and Sundry (and more than a little stale) Links - July 25 2006
- Project Runwayer and hometown girl, Katherine Gerdes has a great how-to post on croquis. I get knitting ideas in my brain that I can't translate to paper well, because I can't sketch to save my life. Maybe this will help a bit.
- Wool 100% - A Japanese Fantasy About Garbage And Knitting
- A Year in Japan - I know, I know, another book by a gaijin who spent time living in Japan. This one, however, is filled with fun illustrations. For instance, check out these socks (scroll down a bit).
- “My first evening dress, May 20, 1930.”
- Almost everyone has already linked to this, so I shall do the same.
- The Social Perils of Boredom
- "Tien, je te donne un Zizou" - I still have a World Cup-sized hole in my heart, though am not as obsessed as some people who shall remain nameless, but are probably not reading this post because they are on youtube and torrent downloading all manner of football-related video. In fact, you probably won't even notice this link I am posting especially for you.

You know, although I love dogs, last night's PR challenge kinda ticked me off. For the second week in a row, there was no real call to solve a creative problem -- just "go make beautful things." What was so hard? And funny how everyone envisioned their woman to be a NYC socialite. Katherine should have sold her dress as a sportier, younger, anti-socialite design.
Robert Best is my fave too. There's the Barbie factor (I'm not the one who flamed you -- promise!) but he also seems to be massively talented, funny and almost shockingly nice.
