IT is the traditional fireside pastime of elderly women and the origin of ill-fitting woollen sweaters and over-sized socks.
But knitting is being taken out of the living room and into the unfamiliar surroundings of a Leith pub to try to persuade more young people to take up the hobby.
Sofi's in Henderson Street is the first pub in Edinburgh to host a pub knitting event.
Organiser Rachel Henderson, 24, hopes both men and women will drop in to knit one, purl one.
Miss Henderson, a consultant for Rowan and Jaeger handknits in John Lewis, said: "I wanted to hold a knitting event in a pub because knitting is a sociable thing and people can enjoy a drink while they knit, so I thought it would be the perfect place. It's nice to have a glass of wine or a pint while practising your favourite hobby.
"I've heard of other knitting clubs taking place in other towns across Britain but I think most of them just meet up, chat, then go home. I want this to be more of a creative art class. I also want to swap patterns and hold wool and needle-swapping nights."
She added: "I want to encourage hand-knitting among young people through using fashionable colours, basic stitches and interesting styles and to show how versatile yarn can be. [more]
