Where there's a wool, there's a way

If I walk in the direction of a haberdashery department it usually means I'm lost.But this time I was genuinely looking for that bit of the shop which sells needles and balls of wool.
As part of the celebrations for National Knitting Week (which runs until Saturday) department store Robert Sayle in Burleigh Street, Cambridge, is holding daily drop-in knitting sessions.
Haberdashery sales assistant and keen knitter Janine Berry, from St Ives, has been running these informal lessons for three years and says they always prove extremely popular.
"We help beginners to get started," says Janine, 56. "Knitting's great because once people know a couple of stitches they can make something simple, like a scarf."
Since she began working in the department three-and-a-half years ago, Janine has seen the interest in knitting take off, especially among teenagers.
"Mature ladies still come in for their traditional balls of double knitting wool but for the youngsters, it's all about buying chunky yarns to make into funky scarves and bags. [more]
