Women knit for needy
The News Journal - October 28 2006
Betty Drennan of Fairfax spent hours knitting in front of her TV, watching the Eagles, Flyers and Phillies lose game after game."They can lose," said 83-year-old Drennan, "but I still knit, so we all win."
And the products of her craft -- dozens of sweaters, slippers and mittens -- are expected to warm the bodies and hearts of Delaware's needy this winter.
She and about 70 other Delawareans knit-and-purled for more than 32,000 hours to create their warming gifts and they spent Friday getting ready for distribution.
[...]Drennan, who has knit since childhood and made sweaters for World War II soldiers as a Red Cross volunteer, admits that knitting "isn't the most popular thing anymore," and the one-time fad of wives knitting argyle socks for husbands is long gone.
But knitting for the needy gives CareWear members -- who must be 55 or older to join -- not only shared purpose, but twice-monthly meetings that program director Debby Vandiver said are extra special for members who are mainly homebound. [more]
